There are many important things to consider when choosing a Fiduciary.
A few to consider are:

1. Licensing - California law now requires all fiduciaries who handle more than one conservatorship or two trust cases to be licensed by the State of California - Is your fiduciary licensed? This can easily be checked here: License Search for Professional Fiduciary

2. What is their financial background? - Do they know investment management, property management, bookkeeping and tax filing?

3 What is their background in medical management? - Most people experience a period of disability during their lifetime - does your fiduciary have the background to understand most common medical problems related to the elderly; dementia, brain injury and health issues related to aging?

4. When your fiduciary goes on vacation, is someone on call for them? - All medical decision making must be done by the power of attorney or conservator when an individual has been deemed to no longer have capacity. Who is answering the phone for your fiduciary when they are on vacation?

5. Who answers the phone in case of an emergency when the office is closed? - A fiduciary should have either an emergency cell phone or an on-call service that can contact them at all hours when the office is closed.

6. Experience - How long has the fiduciary been practicing and have they handled the types of issues that may come up in your case?

7. Are they bonded?

8. Is their business insured against employee theft?

9. Education - Have they completed Cal State Fullerton's program for Conservators and Trustees?

10. Are they a member of and certified by the Professional Fiduciary Association of California and the National Guardianship Assocation?

11. Do they meet a minimum of 15 hours per year of continuing education?
